quantity 的复数形式表达了怎样不同的意思？
应该看情况而定：
首先要分清：a large quantity of 或：quantities of 表示“大量的……”，而the quantity of 表示“……的数量”
1.若是“a large quantity of +复数名词”，则谓语动词用复数，若是“a large quantity of +不可数名词”，则谓语动词用单数。
如：A large quantity of bananas are on the table.。
A large quantity of beer is sold.。
2.若是“quantities of +复数/不可数名词（表示“大量的”）”，则谓语动词一律用复数。
如：
Quantities of nuts are on the ground.。
Large quantities of wheat are being sent abroad.。
3.若是“the quantity of （表示“……的数量”）+复数/不可数名词”，则谓语动词一律用单数。
如：
