The Bengnazambo gold placer is located 90 km southwest of the Xainza County town,1 300 km from the Golmud City of the Qinghai Province,a place of strategic importance on the Qinghai-Tibet highway.The deposit can be eas-ily accessible.。

The gold placer occurs on the plateau hills on the north side of the Gan-dise Mountains and is of flood-plain type.The Bengnazambo River runs from west to east and then turns abruptly northwards.Combining with the Xi-alazangbo River it becomes the Baruzangbo River and flows further northward into the Gyaring Lake.Gold placers are distributed along the Bengnazambo River valley.The deposit consists of one orebody 1 8.67 km long and averag-ingly 237.7 m wide and 4.7 m thick.The average grade of gold in the sand mixis 0.5016 g/m3.In the inner side of the turning of the river there exists a sta-ble and continuous rich ore section over 2 km in length,151 m in width,5 m in thickness with average grade of gold in the sand mix at 2.4785 g/m3.Reserves of the section make up over 40%of the 10 tons of the proved gold.Placer gold occurs chiefly in the loose sandy gravels on the flood plain.The gravels are generally less than 10 cm in diameter,with mud less than 1%.From its dis-covery in 1989 up to 1992 when the exploration was finished,altogether 5700 m of placer boreholes were drilled and 270 m of shallow wells were driven.The reserves were identified at 1 0 tons of placer gold,and the deposit is re-garded as the largest one ever found in Tibet and is also rare in the country in terms of size,grade as well as internal exploitation conditions.。

Gold mining in Xainza area has a long history.Before the liberation of Ti-bet some foreign countries had carried out predatory exploitation in the area north of Xiaka and Bengnazambo.In order to protect their own resources the Tibetan people waged struggles of mysterious style,and the“battles between man and monster”at night had scared the intruders to death.Around 1970 herdsmen of the Xiaka Village found gold nuggets near the corpses of gold dig-gers,the largest weighed 20 g and more.。

In August 1988 at the request of the Xainza Mineral Resources Company LiJingao of the No.5 Geological Party of Tibet inspected the Pb-Zn ore locali-ties around the Gyaring Lake.Being aware of the above information he began to investigate natural heavy concentrates along the river,and at the same time kept on his Pb-Zn ore inspection.As a result,he found the gold from the plac-er samples and,considering both geomorphic and geological conditions he sug-gested that Baruzangbo was a promising area for placer gold.。

In early 1989 the No.5 Geological Party established the Gyaring Lake prospecting group led by Li Jingao and Xia Yuquan in search for gold placer a-long the Baruzangbo river.Through placer prospecting they found an impor-tant clue for placer gold occurrence.Meanwhile the party had contracted to provide 500 kg reserve of placer gold to the Tibet Bureau of Geology.Li Jingao and Xia Yuquan asked to take over the task.After careful discussion the party accepted their request and allocated to them a placer drill with a planned footage of 300 m.In October they discovered the placer gold body at the con-fluence of the Bengnazambo and the Baruzangbo Rivers.The orebody con-trolled was 1200 m long,40-80 m wide and about 2 m thick at a grade of 0.1959-0.3760 g/m3.The prospective reserves reached 530 kg.。

In early 1990 the party discussed repeatedly the planning of ore prospect-ing in Baruzangbo.This had attracted attention from the Tibet Bureau of Ge-ology.Cao Yougong,the chief engineer,and Liu Zhaomo,the deputy chief engineer of the Bureau,traveled a long distance in spite of the snow to Golmud where the party was seated.They inspected the locality and supported the pro-posal of establishing a project for the prospecting in the lower reaches of the Bengnazambo River.Later the party organized the No.2 Subparty with Cuo Jia as the leader,Xiao Ren as the chief geologist,and Li Jingao as the deputy chief geologist to start the work on the Bengnazambo placer gold.At first they traced southwards and operated two profiles,by which they revealed the in-creasing width and thickness of the orebody as well as the rising grade of gold.Then they continued to pursue upstream and drilled boreholes of 946 m with larger spacing.The results they obtained were very encouraging:the orebody controlled reached 12.8 km in length,210 m in width and 3.9 m in thickness at a grade of 1 g/m3.The prospective reserves were calculated to be 15 tons.。

Informed of the good news,leaders of the Autonomous Region and the concerned departments decided to give strong support to the geological prospecting of the deposit.The Planning Commission of the Region invested RMB 18 million yuan and the Bureau of Geology 6 million yuan for the project.The exploration of the deposit was completed in three years'time with a report submitted.This,as a good beginning in Tibet's history,made a breakthrough in the geological work of gold in Tibet.。

In 1991 the detailed survey and exploration started in Bengnazambo.In March the same year at the invitation by the Tibet Bureau of Geology experts of the Heilongjiang and Qinghai Provinces,escorted by Dongdui Langjie,di-rector of the TBG,and Cao Yougong,chief engineer of the Bureau,came to inspect the deposit.Geologists with the Heilongjiang Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources were invited to join the work in the deposit.The explo-ration programme progressed smoothly as scheduled.Prospecting and ex-ploitation of the gold placer will exert significant effects on the economic devel-opment of the northern and the entire Tibet.。
